Sinterklaas and Krampus
Sinterklaas is what Santa Claus is known as all over Europe. Because other countries have different languages Santa Claus is known by many different names. Sinterklass is another way of saying Sint Nicolaas, which is close to what we know Santa Claus as, St. Nick! On the night of December 5th, children leave their shoes by the stove, fireplace, or heater in hopes that Sinterklaas will visit and fill their shoes with presents and candy. December 6th is when presents are dropped off by Sinterklaas!
We are careful to behave throughout the year because we don't want Santa to bring us coal. In Germany, Sinterklaas has a helper that the children know as Krampus. Krampus is the opposite of Santa, and when children do not behave in Germany, Krampus makes sure that Sinterklaas doesn't leave them presents by mistake.
