Italian Traditions
A ceppo is what takes the place of the Christmas Tree in Italy. It is a wooden pyramid that holds small gifts, fruit and candy. On the very bottom shelf there is usually a manger scene. This is also known as the "tree of light" and is decorated with colored paper, pine cones, candles, and has a small doll hung at the top of the pyramid.
The urn of fate is how small presents are given out to other family members during the holidays. Small presents are put into a large container, and family members take turns picking out presents. People keep taking turns until all of the presents are handed out.
During the holidays, in Rome and surrounding areas you can find bagpipers and flute players. They still dress in colorful costumes made of sheepskin vests and knee high pants. They also wear white stockings and long cloaks, traveling from their homes to entertain people at different Italian churches.
