Saturnalia and Sigillaria
Saturnalia is where a lot of modern day celebrations got their start. In Ancient Rome, Saturnalia was a celebration that lasted many days. The celebration started on December 17th and was a celebration of the food and resources that nature gave to everyone. During this celebration people had a very large feast and exchanged presents with friends and family. Throughout Saturnalia there was also a carnival feeling, with different games and activities for all to enjoy!
Sigillaria was the part of the Saturnalia celebration where gift giving took place. On the day of December 23rd special sigillaria (wax figurines) were made to be given out. Children would receive special toys as part of the festival!
